The Building Inspection Division monitors compliance with County building regulations, zoning, and land use ordinances in the unincorporated areas of Alameda County. The Division also ensures private construction complies with the County's Green Building and Construction and Demolition Debris Ordinances.

The Division ensures safe and decent housing by enforcing the County and State housing codes through processing and issuing building permits, investigation of citizens' complaints, and periodic investigations.

This Division issues permits and performs inspections for all construction work done in the unincorporated areas of Alameda County with private funds.

Residential Permits - One-Two Family Residential Homes

Permits for New Residential Unit, Room Addition, Patio Cover, Deck, Swimming Pool, Garage Addition, Kitchen & Bathroom Remodel, Interior Alteration, Window replacement, Termite Repair, Chimney repair, Retaining Wall, Demolition, Structural Alteration, Re-pipe, HVAC Replacement, Electrical Panel Upgrade, Solar Panels or Garage Conversion.

Online Permits Available: Water Heater Replacement and Re-Roof.

Non-Residential Permits

Permits for New, Addition, Alteration or Change of Occupancies, of Commercial, Industrial, Office, or Multi-family Buildings. Work may also include Electrical, Plumbing and Mechanical facilities, Demolition, Signage, Solar Panel, Commercial Kitchen, or Site work.

Request to Review Building Permit Property File(s)


Please fill out the following request to review historical building permit files maintained by the Alameda County Building Department. These files are the collection of all building permits issued on the property through the Alameda County Building Department. Requests must be received before noon on each Wednesday. Staff will retrieve requested property files from the County storage room and notify customers by phone or email on the next working day (Thursday). Files will be kept for 10 working days at the Alameda County Permit Center (399 Elmhurst Street, Room 141, Hayward, CA) for reviewing during normal business hours. Please contact our staff at 510-670-5440 when requesting more than 4 files at one time.
